"When do I start making money?"

3 steps we took to become profitable

Many of you submitted similar questions, all along the lines of:

“When do I start making money?”

Ah, the million-dollar question! And while Caro, our lead designer, may dabble in astrology, none of us have a crystal ball to predict the exact moment you’ll hit your sales goals. I know this may not be the answer you were hoping for, but the truth is, your profitability depends on taking consistent action, knowing how to market yourself, and showing up every day with the right growth tactics.

From what we’ve seen in our work at Creadora, service providers tend to reach their sales goals faster—sometimes within a month or two—while e-commerce brands often take a bit longer, depending on ad spend, inventory demand, and other factors.

What We Did to Become Profitable

We’ve been where you are, and we totally understand the challenges of getting your business to a profitable place. So, here are three things we did early on that helped us actually make money:

1. Defined Our Audience

When you’re just starting, it’s tempting to think your audience is “anyone who will pay.” But in the long run, it’s more effective to target a specific audience that you can serve best. Trying to appeal to everyone can drain your resources and burn you out.

For us, we realized our ideal clients were female founders starting their businesses. Focusing on this group allowed us to tailor our messaging, services, and resources to meet their specific needs, making us a much better fit for them.

2. Restructured Our Offering

Once we defined our audience, we realized we needed to restructure our services to better serve them. One of us had previously worked with large e-commerce brands that could afford $4,000 per month for 10 emails, but our audience—female founders just starting out—had different needs and budgets.

Through conversations with potential clients, we learned that a more practical solution was a package of 6-8 emails per month starting at a $750 price point. It provided just what they needed without overwhelming their budget. By offering services that aligned with their needs and finances, we became a valuable investment rather than a burden.

3. Networked Our Tails Off

Here’s something that took us a while to learn: building a beautiful website and crafting a flawless brand strategy doesn’t automatically bring clients through the door. We perfected everything, sat back, and waited… and waited. Crickets.

Referrals trickled in, but we quickly realized we had to actively seek out clients. So, we took on a sales challenge (yes, with a checklist and everything). We posted on LinkedIn, reached out to friends and former colleagues, and knocked on doors (figuratively and literally!). This networking hustle finally helped us hit our revenue goals.

Building a profitable business takes effort, clarity, and resilience. If you’re just starting out, don’t feel pressured to rush things. Focus on understanding your ideal audience, shaping your offerings to serve them, and putting yourself out there.
