How to start an online store.

Hi Creadora!

Welcome to the first installment of our new series, “Ok, but How the Heck Do You Start a [X] Business?” Today, we're diving into e-commerce. There’s quite a bit to cover so let’s dive into it.

Here's a list of what you need to do to start an online store:

  1. Pick a Niche

    • We recommend something you are knowledgeable about or have a keen interest. For inspiration think about your lifestyle, hobbies, areas of study, or interests. L

  2. Find a Problem

    • For this exercise, let’s say your niche is moms, specifically those concerned about toxic items. Spend some time on social media or in local mom groups to identify a problem they are facing. For instance, they might feel overwhelmed by finding non-toxic products or everyone agrees there are no good options for x product.

  3. Decide on the Product

    • You can choose between a digital or physical product. A digital product is a great way to validate the market and build your audience. You can also opt for a physical product if you have the resources and feel comfortable handling the logistics.

  4. Design Your Brand

    • Create a simple logo and color palette. If you don’t have a design background, start simple. You can always hire a designer to update it later.

  5. Set Up Your Store

    • Go to Shopify and set up a store using a template. Keep it simple and clean; don’t overthink it.

  6. Automate Your Email Marketing

    • Set up a pop-up to capture emails and create a welcome sequence. Additionally, set up browse abandonment, abandoned cart, abandoned checkout, and post-purchase flows. Those are the main 5 email flows you’ll need to get started.

  7. Promote Your Store

    • Don’t try to be everywhere at once. Choose two channels where your target audience spends the most time. For example, moms prefer Instagram, Facebook groups, and Pinterest. Pick the one you enjoy creating content for and can stay consistent with.

  8. Nurture Your Customer Base

    • Get customer feedback and follow up with more products they are interested in. Listen to your audience and establish authentic relationships.

  9. Find Support

    • Starting an online business is a marathon, not a sprint. Seek out mentors who can help you solve problems more efficiently and stay focused and motivated.
